Splean
The Formation of Splean
Splean, a popular Russian rock band, was formed in Saint Petersburg on May 27, 1994. The band's unique name is derived from "spleen" in the sense of "depression", with the "ea" spelling being a pun on the Beatles' name. This creative play on words was inspired by a short poem by Sasha Cherny, which the band set to music.
Early Years and Musical Evolution
The band's lead singer, Alexander Vasilyev, and bass guitarist, Alexander Morozov, initiated the formation of Splean while working in the "Buff" theatre as stage workers. Despite the risk of losing their jobs, they began recording their first album, "Pyl'naja byl'" (Dusty Fact), in the theatre's studio at night. Their growing popularity was boosted by the support of well-known figures like Boris Grebenshchikov and Konstantin Kinchev.
Breakthrough and Continued Success
Splean's music journey has been marked by continuous growth and experimentation. Despite rumors of a potential breakup in 2004, the band has remained active and popular. Their sound and style have evolved significantly from their original version.
Major Performances and Recognition
In 1998, Splean opened for The Rolling Stones at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium during the Bridges to Babylon Tour. They headlined major festivals like Krylya in 2005 and Nashestvie in 2015. Their achievements include winning several Nashe Radio "Chart Dozen" awards, such as Best Song and Chart Leader for "Orkestr" in 2015, and Best Album for "Obman Zrenija" (Optical Illusion) in 2013.
Discography Highlights
Splean has an extensive discography, including albums like "Pyl'naja byl'" (1994), "Kollekcioner Oruzhija" (Arms Collector) (1996), "Fonar' pod Glazom" (Black Eye) (1997), and "Granatovyj Al'bom" (Pomegranate Album) (1998). Their music spans various genres like alternative rock, acoustic rock, indie rock, progressive rock, folk rock, and grunge.
Contributions to Soundtracks
Splean has also contributed to various soundtracks, including for films like "Brother 2" and "War". Their songs like "Линия жизни" (Life Line) and "Моё сердце" (My Heart) have featured in several movies, further expanding their influence in Russian pop culture.
Splean remains a significant and influential band in Russia, known for their poetic lyrics and unique sound that has resonated with fans across the former Soviet Union. Their journey from a small theatre in Saint Petersburg to major stages and film soundtracks showcases their versatility and enduring appeal in the Russian rock music scene.
