Boombox
Origins and Formation
Boombox, also known as Бумбокс, is a Ukrainian band formed in 2004 by vocalist Andriy Khlyvnyuk and guitarist Andriy Samoilo. The band quickly gained popularity in Ukraine and beyond, with their music predominantly in Ukrainian, and some songs in Russian and English. They are known for their unique blend of funk rock, reggae, hip hop, and other genres, making them a standout act in the Ukrainian music scene.
Debut and Early Success
The band's debut album "Меломанія" (Melomania) was recorded in just 19 hours and released in April 2005, creating a buzz among music critics and fans alike. Their follow-up album "Family бізнес" (Family Business), released in 2006, included the hit song "Vakhteram" and achieved gold status in Ukraine and platinum in Russia. This album was noted for its improved quality and thoughtful lyrics, showcasing the band's growth.
Continuing Evolution
Boombox continued to evolve with subsequent albums like "III" in 2008, "Все включено" (All included) in 2010, and "Середній Вiк" (Middle Age) in 2011. Each album brought new sounds and styles, further cementing their place in the music world. "Terminal B," released in 2013, was a reflection of the band's life on tour, featuring songs from earlier works and new tracks.
Recent Works and Tours
In recent years, Boombox released "Люди" (People) in 2016, "Голий король" (Naked King) in 2017, and a two-part album "Таємний код: Рубікон" (The Secret Code: Rubicon) in 2019. These albums continued to showcase their versatility and depth in music creation. The band embarked on tours to support these releases, though some performances were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Commitment to Social and Political Issues
Boombox has been vocal about social and political issues. Following the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea, the band stopped performing in Russia. In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the band postponed a North American tour, and all members joined the Ukrainian Territorial Defense Forces. Andriy Khlyvnyuk even gained international attention for his a cappella version of the Ukrainian folk song "Oh, the Red Viburnum in the Meadow," which was remixed by South African musician The Kiffness and incorporated into Pink Floyd's single "Hey, Hey, Rise Up!" in support of Ukraine.
The Present and Future of Boombox
As of 2021, Boombox continues to release new music, including singles like "Sorry," appealing to fans of deep and emotive compositions. Despite not performing in Russia, their music remains popular among Russian fans. Boombox remains a significant and influential band in Ukraine and a symbol of the country's vibrant music scene.
Boombox's journey from its formation to becoming a musical icon in Ukraine is a testament to their talent, hard work, and dedication to their craft and social causes. Their music not only entertains but also reflects the socio-political landscape, making them a voice for their generation.
